To add one of your IM network buddies to your buddy list, make sure that you have an account on the same network and that the IM network has been added to your meebo account. For example, if you want to add a buddy who is within the Yahoo network, make sure you have added your Yahoo account to meebo.
- From the buddy list, click on the add buddy icon
- Add Buddy! window will open
- Enter your buddy's name
- Select the network your buddy is from
(NOTE: The listed networks are based on the IM network accounts you have added to your meebo account.)
- Choose the group to add your buddy to
- Click Add Buddy
- Your buddy will get a buddy request message. When your buddy accepts your request, you will get the following buddy request.

Click Accept to allow your buddy to add you to their buddy list.
If your buddy is online, your buddy will be added to the group you specified.
If your buddy is offline (not logged in), your buddy will be added to the Offline group.
If you don't want to see a buddy on your buddy list anymore, you can remove them. There are 2 ways to remove your buddies. You can remove buddies using the remove buddy icon or the right click menu.
- Click on the buddy to highlight it
- Click on the delete buddy icon
- A message will pop up to confirm that you wish to remove the buddy, click Remove
To remove buddy using right click menu:
- Right click on the buddy, a little menu will appear
- Select Remove
- A message will pop up to confirm that you wish to remove the buddy, click Remove
You can change your buddies' screen names to something more recognizable if their account name is a little cryptic.
- Right click on the buddy you want to rename, a little menu will appear
- Select Rename buddy
- Enter a new name for your buddy in the text box, then hit enter on your keyboard when done
If you don't want a buddy to be able to IM you any longer, you can block them.
- On your buddy list, right-click on the buddy you want to block
- A menu will pop-up - select Block Yourbuddiesname
- A message will pop up to confirm that you wish to block the buddy, click Block
- That buddy will now appear on your Offline group or be removed from your buddy list. This all depends on what network protocol your blocking your buddy from.
- If you want to remove the buddies that move to your offline contacts altogether from your buddy list, right-click on their name in the Offline group and select Remove Yourbuddiesname. A message will pop up to confirm that you wish to remove the buddy - click Remove.
If you see your blocked buddy within the offline group on your buddy list with a grayed blocked icon, you can unblock the buddy by right-clicking on his/her name and selecting ‘unblock’.
If you don’t see the blocked buddy within the offline group, unfortunately, currently, to unblock that buddy, you need to re-add him/her to your buddy list again. After they accept, you will see their name grayed out with a blocked icon (an o with a line across it to the left of their name). Just right click on the buddy and you will see option to unblock.
When you add a buddy, you can specify which group to put your buddy into. If later you wish to reorganize your buddy groupings, it can be done easily.
- Click and drag the buddy into a different group
Note: You can do this while your buddy is offline as well. When your buddy gets online, your buddy will show up in the group you've moved them to.
Even with your buddies “offline”, you can still manage them while they are in the Offline group, including renaming them and viewing chat conversations that has taken place. (Note: You will be able to view chat logs only if you have enabled “Saved my IM history to view later” within your meebo preferences.) You can also see which group your offline buddies belong in and regroup them if you wish.
- Right click on the buddy in the Offline group, a little menu will appear with the functions you can perform
To see which group your offline buddy belongs in:
- Hover your mouse cursor over the buddy
- A tooltip will appear, displaying the group the buddy belongs in
- If you want to move the buddy to a different group, click and drag the offline buddy's name to the group you wish to move the buddy to. When your buddy logs on, your buddy will show up in the group you have moved them to.
If you want to divide your buddy list into smaller groups, you can add new groups. If you reorganized your buddies and no longer need a group, you can remove the group.
To add a new group:
- Right click on any of buddy group header, a small menu will appear
Select Add New Group
- Add Buddy Group! window will appear
Enter a name for your new group, then click Add New Group
To remove a group:
- Right click on the buddy group header that you want to remove, a small menu will appear
Select Remove Group
- Remove Buddy Group! window will appear
NOTE: If you have buddies still within the group, the buddies will also be deleted! If you only want to remove the group but not your buddies, move your buddies to a different group before removing the group.
Click on Remove if you want to remove the group and buddies within the group
If you get IM from people you do not know, you can block them from IMing you again.
To block unsolicited IMs
- On the IM window, click on the block icon
- A confirmation message will appear, click OK to block the person
Note: Currently, there is no option to view a list of all the people you have blocked. If you do not know the buddy name you have blocked, there is no way to obtain that information.
The Privacy feature enables you to block messages from users who are not on your buddy list.
To block messages from users not on your buddy list:
- Click on preferences on your meebo page.
- Choose IM Settings from the drop down menu
- a IM Setting box will appear.
- Check the box that says Only receive messages from friends
- Close the IM Setting box to save.
With the privacy option selected, you will only get IMs from buddies on your buddy list. You will still receive Buddy Request invitation.
